The Department of Media, Journalism and Film facilities are in Williams Hall. Faculty offices are sprinkled throughout the building and most MJF courses are held there, although a few may be scheduled in Bachelor, Upham, McGuffey or even the Engineering Building's classrooms.
Williams Hall contains two computer classrooms, three traditional classrooms, one film editing lab, several individual film-editing and audio-editing studios, a full broadcast news sound set and master control studio, and a radio production studio. The building has a student lounge and several conference rooms, as well as an equipment checkout facility where students can user their ID's to borrow anything from a digital SLR camera to digital voice recorders to digital video camcorders for class projects. In a separate Williams Hall suite of rooms, Miami students operate WMSR Redhawk Radio - news, sports, music and live talk - with the latest in radio broadcast technology. Each of the two Williams Hall computer labs - in rooms 115C and 227 - have 20 new Macs outfitted with the latest Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and other software integral to multimedia work so that students can step right into the professional world with experience and confidence. They are open to students for lab hours most afternoons and early evenings. A separate film and broadcast-focused lab in Williams Hall has Macs outfitted with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier and other video editing suites.
Our state-of-the-art, high-definition TV studio and master control has two sets and a multi-camera set-up for live shows and recorded interviews. It offers students the professional world experience in an academic setting - and our myriad grads working in broadcast and film attest to the quality of the Miami experience.
Miami MJF faculty and staff believe students must have hands-on experience in media and film work. So we provide the latest in technology - digital cameras, audio recorders, digital broadcast and film camcorders, tripods and more - for student check-out.
When you are enrolled in a media production class, you simply take your ID to the equipment check-out room, Williams Hall 123, and check out what you need for a specific time period. Free and easy!
