Academics

At ETBD, we believe the space where creativity, design, technology and business intersect will continue to experience extraordinary growth in the coming decades. Traditional academic models are poorly equipped to adjust to the rapidly shifting landscape created by disruptive and emerging technologies. That’s why ETBD takes a fundamentally different approach to higher education.

We believe in being student-centered with a high level of touchpoints with the evolving industry. Our project-based vision enables students to develop high-quality portfolios and case studies while forming their professional network with dynamic industry professionals. All the while, our institution's commitment to a liberal education ensures that ETBD students are becoming well-rounded global citizens who are able to surf on the edge of tomorrow and engage in rich, meaningful work upon graduation.

ETBD also takes tremendous pride in our “out of the classroom box” experiences where students are embedded in industry for hands-on apprenticeship with industry professionals as well as engaged in cutting-edge research with our elite faculty.

IMPORTANT: If you began your first year at Miami before August 2019, your DAR will reflect the older version of the degree. You should follow your DAR, in consultation with your advisor. If you want to use these new requirements (on this page) instead, talk to your advisor about shifting your DAR to the new degree program.

Thus, ETBD students work with students of all disciplines, are taught by faculty from all perspectives, and will have experience working with industry and non-profits on real-world projects.

ETBD research includes topics such as e-commerce, computational art, digital humanities, visualization, rapid prototyping, game design, physical computing, web development, game development, game studies, design thinking, interaction design, user experience design, user interface design, usability, Internet and social media marketing, virtual and augmented reality, mobile computing, and mechatronics, just to name a few active areas of interest.

ETBD weaves hands-on experiential, team-based learning into as many courses as possible. All ETBD students participate in Armstrong Interactive, a client-based consulting capstone class, that delivers real interactive solutions to paying corporate clients. Past clients include Coca-Cola, P&G, Bank of America, Convergys, Cablevision, HP, Hulu, Cintas, Gensler, Weber-Shandwick, Cardinal Health, J Peterman, The Tibetan Government in Exile, and various startups.
