Student Handbook
If the student is essentially joining the program without prior graduate work being transferred in, the School Psychology Course Sequence that was represented previously in this Handbook will constitute the student’s plan of study. Otherwise, the student will review an “individual plan of study” with their academic advisor during their first semester.
The plan should include a semester sequencing of all courses required in the program and identification of courses to be transferred or waived (if any). Changes in prescribed programs may be made with the approval of the student's advisor and the program coordinator.
It is essential to understand that professional academic preparation and the provision of excellent field experiences are important in the development of future school psychologists. These are necessary but not sufficient conditions for successful program completion. Students must be able to demonstrate appropriate interpersonal and group collaborative skills to effectively function as school psychologists.
Please see the intern competencies that are evaluated at the end of the program to see the development of professional skills that are expected, as well as the professional dispositions (including students’ ability to relate well to others) which are also necessary for successful program completion.
Overall, each student’s plan of study provides multiple systematic opportunities to establish professional identity as a school psychologist and an affiliation with colleagues and faculty.
Credit/No Credit - Students enrolled in any departmental program may not take required EDP courses for credit/no credit.
Timelines
It is the student's responsibility to meet associated timelines for university, college, departmental, and individual course requirements. Information about all of these requirements should be obtained through a careful review of the Miami University Graduate Catalog, academic year calendars, course syllabi, and website. If such information is not found, the student should begin their search for clarity or additional information by contacting, in order, the professor, instructor, or other professional in question, their advisor, the program coordinator, and/or the chair of the department. Students must be aware of strictly enforced timelines associated with graduation: application (through the Commencement office) and payment of fees (Bursar's office). In addition, students must be aware of current requirements for class registration, applications for graduate assistantships, and applications for certification and the Praxis exam (#5403).
