Program Admission

Application Process

Our application process is competitive and we receive many more applications than we can accept each year. Please note that the School Psychology program admits only full-time students. We strive to provide assistantship support to all of our students. Please see below for important application procedures.

To be admitted to the School Psychology program, you must first apply to Miami University’s Graduate School. All application materials are submitted online via the university application portal.

  • Official transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Be sure to indicate on the online application if you are interested in an assistantship.
  • Three professional letters of reference from faculty or other persons who can provide information about your potential for graduate study and your interpersonal skills.
    • Applicants will neither collect nor submit the letters but instead need only to list their references' names, titles, and work email addresses on their applications. Miami University will contact your references and collect your letters online via the application system.
  • A resume detailing your education and work experience.
  • An essay stating your reasons for pursuing the degree. Please tell us about your goals and why you are seeking admission to Miami’s program. The essay should be a minimum of 500 words.
  • Optional: Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score. Those who choose to take and submit scores for the General test, please request that your scores be sent directly to Miami University (code R1463) and indicate School Psychology as the department code name. See GRE registration information on their website. Our program made the GRE General Test optional for admission, beginning with the fall 2021 class. You may submit scores if you have them, and they will be considered by the admissions committee. Applications without GRE scores will be given equal consideration.

Admission Deadlines and Selection Process

Completed applications must be received by Jan. 15 to be considered for fall admission. In order to facilitate admission, you should submit all application materials through the online application portal prior to the deadline.

We are a competitive program and we typically accept 12 students per cohort.

Applicants are evaluated based on:

  • academic record
  • personal goals and fit with program aims
  • previous related work or experiences
  • letters of recommendation
  • interpersonal skills

School psychology faculty will review applications leading up to the Jan. 15th deadline. After the deadline, finalists will be selected and invited to interviews with faculty, staff, and current students in early February.

We hold one in-person Interview Day in-person, and one virtual Interview Day, which take place in the same week. Interview Day consists of:

  1. an orientation to the program
  2. individual interviews with faculty, staff, and community partners
  3. a tour of the McGuffey Hall facility and Miami University campus
  4. multiple sessions to meet current school psychology students, as well as interns

Because we can only accommodate a limited number of on-campus interviewees, and in recognition that some students may not be able to travel for in-person interviews, some students may be offered video conference interviews.

Final decisions about the acceptance of candidates for admission into the program will be made anytime February through April, with final decisions communicated in April if not sooner. Candidates offered admission have until April 15th to indicate their decision.
