A pair of Farmer School of Business Accountancy students have been named 2025 Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholars.

Juniors Layla Gardner and AJ Hainline each received a $15,000 scholarship for the upcoming school year. The scholarships, awarded since 2011, are mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and are funded through monetary penalties collected as part of PCAOB enforcement actions.

Those nominated for the award must demonstrate interest and aptitude in accounting and auditing as evidenced by an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher or being in the top 1/3 of their overall class and must demonstrate high ethical standards.

“The PCAOB Scholars Program seeks to benefit students who are likely to become auditors and to make a difference to students who might otherwise choose a different career path,” the group’s website states.

FSB Accountancy students have been named PCAOB Scholars in each of the last eight years, and this is the second consecutive year in which two FSB students were so honored.

“When I learned that I was awarded the scholarship I was extremely happy and excited. This was the first time I had ever received a scholarship or award like this, so it meant a lot,” Hainline said.

"My reaction to winning this scholarship was complete shock. I was so unbelievably happy and excited," Gardner said. "I've done so many great things this last year and this is just another great accomplishment for me and I can't wait to see what more I can do during my time at Miami."
