Ten faculty members receive awards for teaching, service, and research

Ten members of the Farmer School of Business faculty received awards for their work during the 2025-26 school year last week.

The James Robeson Junior Faculty Award for Research Excellence goes to Dr. Ozge Sürer, Assistant Professor of Information Systems & Analytics. 

Sürer’s research develops data-driven methods to improve decision-making under uncertainty, with applications in engineering, healthcare, and business analytics.

Sürer has published in leading journals such as Technometrics and the Journal of Quality Technology, and has also been the sole author on several occasions. She has also received recognition through invited presentations and research grants.

The Farmer School of Business Senior Faculty Award for Research Excellence goes to Dr. Brad Goldie, Richard T. Farmer Associate Professor of Finance.

Goldie’s research focuses on the role of information and incentives in financial markets, including the behavior of mutual fund and hedge fund managers as well as corporate executives.

Goldie’s work has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Management and Contemporary Accounting Research, and has been featured in outlets including CNN and Forbes.

This year’s recipient of the Gifford Junior Faculty Teaching Innovation Award is Katie Tew, Assistant Lecturer in Accountancy.

Tew received the award for her creative "small-class feel" strategy. She created a small-class feel in a large lecture class in order for students to reap the benefits of a small classroom experience by providing multiple ways for students to ask questions, developed multiple in class exercises to create active participation, and started an SI and UA program.

This year’s recipient of the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award as the Outstanding Clinical Professor is Dr. Justin McGlothin, Associate Teaching Professor in Management and FYIC.

McGlothin was selected for his Beyond Ready approach, which leverages his entrepreneurial background to bridge academic concepts with real- world professional expectations through high-energy, experiential learning.

He specifically innovated the curriculum by integrating artificial intelligence into business projects, teaching students to use AI as a decision-support tool while prioritizing human judgment and critical thinking.

Additionally, his commitment to mentorship and the incorporation of emerging frameworks such as Gentelligence have resulted in exceptional student engagement and strong evidence of professional development.

This year’s recipient of the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award as the Outstanding Junior Professor is Dr. Anna-Katharina Lenz, Lance & Diane White Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship.

Lenz was recognized for preparing students to be Beyond Ready by equipping them to navigate uncertainty, complexity, and rapid change with clarity and resilience. Her teaching effectiveness is validated by consistently high student evaluations.

She demonstrated exceptional leadership by scaling her interdisciplinary methods through campus- wide workshops on ideation, navigating uncertainty, and embodied decision-making.

This year’s recipient of the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award as the Outstanding Professor is
Dr. Tim Eaton, Arthur Andersen Alumni Professor in Accountancy.

Eaton earned the award for his profound commitment to the teacher-scholar model, most notably through mentoring numerous students in the EY Teacher-Scholar program and co-authoring 19 publications with them.

He implemented innovative Point of View exercises that engage students in professional debate over complex, current issues.

Additionally, his dedication to continual learning is evident in his proactive integration of emerging topics such as AI and ESG into his curriculum. He did this while maintaining academic rigor.

 

The Farmer School Faculty Service Excellence Awardaward acknowledges faculty who demonstrate excellence in service to the Farmer School through their overall contributions and impact in supporting our mission. These types of activities include leadership and commitment to departmental, divisional, and university initiatives.

Dr. Maria Weese, Associate Professor in Information Systems & Analytics and FSB Faculty Fellow and MSBA Faculty Director, who is one of this year’s recipients of the Farmer School Faculty Service Excellence Award.

Weese’s record of service is both extensive and distinctive. She has served on six faculty search committees, including chairing two. She has contributed at the school level through the FSB Research Committee, Graduate Council, and multiple ad hoc committees on faculty composition.

She has also played a key role in the MSBA program, serving on the admissions committee and, more recently, serving as faculty director. 

Weese regularly mentors faculty and conducts peer teaching evaluations. In addition, Maria has contributed for years to outreach efforts, such as the Careers in Quantitative Skills Day, which introduces high school students to analytics.

Weese has provided sustained leadership of the ISA department’s social media presence since 2017. She has hired and mentored student teams, meeting with them weekly and investing over 100 hours to build a presence that reaches nearly 2,000 followers.

Her efforts have strengthened student engagement, supported recruitment, and raised over $13,000 for the ISA Student Experience Fund through #MoveInMiami.

Weese’s service is thoughtful, student-centered, and consistently above and beyond expectations.

Brenda Homan, Forsythe Chair in Entrepreneurship & Associate Lecturer, is also one of this year’s recipient of the Farmer School Faculty Service Excellence Award.

Homan fills many roles in the Entrepreneurship department and contributes to every aspect of department operations. From judging pitch competitions and contributing to Startup and Social Innovation weekends, to working with students to connect with alumni, providing additional pitch training, and reaching out to high school students, her fingerprints are all over the department. 

She has either chaired or been a member of 13 search committees since fall of 2023. Beyond the department, she has been active in FSB initiatives and serves on many different committees and initiatives. 

Her service at the university level includes Miami THRIVE committees during the creation of the strategic plan, as well as an implementation committee, working on staff professional development.

Her service goes beyond expectations and contributes to the success of her department and to the division.

 

The year, there are two recipients of the David W. Rosenthal Case Method Teaching Support Fund.
