The Howe Center for Business Writing (HCBW) offers in-person writing consultations for all Farmer School of Business writers. We are located on the second floor of FSB, room 2045. If you have questions or need help scheduling, call 513-529-6100.
FSB students are also welcome to make in-person appointments with HWC writing consultants at King Library and Peabody Hall, or online appointments with HWC consultants through our live online and written online consulting platforms. When making an appointment, choose the preferred schedule from the drop-down menu.
HCBW consultants are specially trained in business writing and can support writers at any stage of the writing process, from early brainstorming to final drafting. HCBW consultants can help writers with:
Papers, reports, and team writing projects
Cover letters, personal statements, and applications
Honors theses, Miami Plan capstone projects and master’s theses

How should I prepare for my on-campus appointment?
You should come to your appointment with some ideas about what you'd like to work on for 45 minutes. You can bring a print or digital copy of your paper. You can also bring your own computer or use one of the writing center's laptops. We ask that you also bring the following, when applicable:
The assignment sheet and course syllabus
Any writing you’ve already done, including notes, outlines, or early drafts
Relevant books, articles, or other resources you’re using
Any feedback you’ve already received
What kinds of writing can I submit for consultation?
HWC writing consultants can assist you with just about any project. Here’s a list of the kinds of writing we regularly see:
Papers, reports, and group projects for any course, in any department
Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other “creative” forms of writing (we believe all writing is “creative,” for the record)
Honors theses, Miami Plan capstone projects, master’s theses, and dissertations
PowerPoint presentations, websites, digital movies, and other non-print projects (restore when live appointments are back)
Cover letters, personal statements, and applications for fellowships and employment
Personal and professional writing projects outside of class assignments
We are happy to look at any and all career-focused documents, but we also recommend theCenter for Career Explorationfor specific advice on resumes.
Are there HCBW consultants who come from an FSB background?
HCBW writing consultants are Miamiundergraduate and graduate students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. Many of the consultants who work at the HCBW in FSB are business majors or minors. All of them have been specially trained to support FSB writers.
You can look through ourconsultant biosto learn more about their majors and interests. This information may help you find a consultant who would be a particularly good fit for your writing questions or tasks.
From May 28th - August 8th we are open Tuesday-Thursday for Written Online consultations. If you have any questions about setting up an appointment please contact the HWC manager, Kate Francis, at francik@miamioh.edu.
Accessibility
The Howe Writing Center is committed to helping provide accommodations for all Miami writers who have scheduled writing center consultations. To request an accommodation, or to inquire about the accommodations we can provide (i.e., viewing or accessing materials in alternative formats, using assistive technologies during an in-person consultation), please contact writing center manager Kate Francis (francik@miamioh.edu) at least 2 business days prior to your consultation. We are also happy to collaborate with the Miller Center in providing such accommodations. If you use a screen reader, check out our web guide on how screen readers function within the Live Online consulting space.
