The Miami University Department of Music encourages its students to develop their relationship to the discipline of music as they explore the world through the lens of a superb liberal arts education.
The Miami University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jeremy Long, is the premiere big band at Miami and performs in a wide variety of styles from swing to funk with a focus on the enduring music made famous by the orchestras of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman and Count Basie, and composers such as Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, and Charles Mingus. The internationally known jazz artists who have been featured with the ensemble include Benny Golson, Donald Byrd, Robin Eubanks, Joel Frahm, Bill Watrous, John Fedchock, Dave Pietro, Wayne Bergeron, Jim Snidero, Lee Konitz, and Matthew Harris. The Jazz Ensemble has been invited to appear at jazz festivals, educational conferences, and schools, including the Saturday evening slot at the 44th Annual Elmhurst Jazz Festival, the Ohio Music Educators Conference, and other area jazz festivals.
Students interested in Jazz Ensemble should complete the Student Info Form and enroll in MUS 100K. The form includes all audition materials and accepts video uploads for placement in the ensemble.
