Principles, practice and current research underlying the use of ontologies for the Semantic Web. Key concepts including: ontology representation and reasoning, ontological engineering, software tools, ontology visualization, and applications.

CSE 586 or permission of instructor
Course Objectives:
To understand the role of ontologies in the Semantic Web
To understand the basics of description logics, ontological representation, and ontological reasoning
To develop skills in designing and building ontologies.
To become knowledgeable about current ontology software tools, e.g., editors, mergers, visualization
To learn about specific and current research areas, e.g. ontology evaluation, ontology visualization, ontology driven information retrieval, and semantic interoperability.
To develop a research proposal that could serve as a proposal for the student's masters thesis.
