Farrell receives the American Accounting Association 2025 Outstanding Service Award

The American Accounting Association (AAA) announced that Farmer School of Business Department of Accountancy chair Anne M. Farrell is the recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Service Award.

The award will be presented to Farrell in the form of a unique glass art piece at the August 5 luncheon at the 2025 AAA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

"This news just knocked me out! I’ve been a member of the AAA since I was a Ph.D. student. It’s impossible to overstate how much the AAA has meant to me both professionally and personally. I would never had so many opportunities to carve out the career I’d hoped for, or to meet so many wonderful colleagues around the world – many of whom I’m also proud to call friends," Farrell said. "Serving the AAA in a variety of roles at the section and national levels has simply been my way to pay it forward, and I’m proud of what the organization has been able to accomplish. Not to mention that I’ve had a lot of fun along the way!"

Farrell has served in numerous AAA roles, including Vice President-Finance; the Management Accounting Section (MAS) President and Secretary/Treasurer; the Accounting Behavior and Organizations (ABO) Secretary/Treasurer; and co-chair of the Midcareer Faculty Consortium, AAA Publications Processes, and Section Reporting Committees/Task Forces.

Her scholarship examines how management accounting systems affect employee decision-making. She is an Editor at Contemporary Accounting Research and Management Accounting Research and former Editor at Behavioral Research in Accounting. She has received several awards for research, teaching, and service, including the AAA’s MAS Notable Contribution to Management Accounting Literature and Greatest Potential Impact on Management Accounting Practice Awards, and the IMA/MAS Jim Bulloch Award for Innovations in Management Accounting Education.

The Outstanding Service Award recognizes outstanding services to the American Accounting Association other than educational and research contributions. The prestigious award is intended only for rare events or milestones achieved. Farrell previously won the award in 2019. She is only the second person to ever receive the award twice since it was first awarded in 1991.
