Trades Assistant
General Function
Performs tasks related to assisting in routine to moderately complex repair or construction of university facilities or property which require specialized training in a skilled trade
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions
- Assists in the routine to moderately complex repair of University property and facilities using expertise acquired through specialized training in a skilled trade.
- Performs moderately difficult repair and preventive maintenance on University property and facilities using expertise acquired through specialized training in a skilled trade.
- Assists outside contractors as needed; assists craftspersons from other trades as needed.
- Maintains and cleans tools and equipment.
- Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
Reporting Relationships
Direction Received: Reports to Trades Shop-Assistant Supervisor, Manager of Physical Facilities, or other Manager of Trades/Maintenance unit
Direction Given: No responsibility for directing the work of others
Minimum Requirements
Requires six months training beyond high school in a skilled trade and one year of experience in that trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Driver's license required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics
- Knowledge of the procedures and equipment of a particular skilled trade
- Mechanical aptitude
- Knowledge of safety procedures
Working Conditions
Frequent standing and walking with some climbing and lifting of materials weighing 50 to 75 pounds. Frequent operation of equipment. Somewhat unpleasant working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements which are particular disagreeable. Some element of personal risk and exposure to accidents.
