On-Campus Wi-Fi

Fast, secure Wi-Fi access for all!

At Miami, we have various wireless networks to choose from, based on your role or need. Those networks are:

• MiamiOH-Secure: For students, faculty, and staff with a Miami UniqueID and password
• MiamiOH-Visitor: For family and friends who come to visit. This network is limited and should only be used for internet browsing
• MiamiOH-MyDevices: For your home automation and Internet of Things devices (e.g., smart light bulbs, Alexa devices, and gaming equipment)
• eduroam: Miami users can use their full email address and MUnet password to log in to this network shared across many higher-ed institutions
• MU-WIRELESS: Deprecated network (Use MiamiOH-Secure instead)
• MU-GAMING: Deprecated network (Use MiamiOH-MyDevices instead)

A note about networks

Please note that while MU-WIRELESS and MU-GUEST may still appear as options on your device, you should be using MiamiOH-Secure and MiamiOH-Visitor, respectively. These older networks will be going away at the beginning of 2025.

Wireless Network Access (Wi-Fi)

On Mac and iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, etc.), simply select MiamiOH-Secure from your Wi-Fi menu and enter your Miami UniqueID and password to log in. It provides you with a secure connection and gives you access to the complete range of network services. It may be helpful to prioritize your list of wireless networks and remove any that are not MiamiOH-Secure, including MiamiOH-Visitor.

On a Windows computer, some setup is required. First, connect to the MiamiOH-Visitor network and open a web browser to automatically download a small configuration script that will connect you to MiamiOH-Secure from then on. It will also be helpful to remove any networks that are not MiamiOH-Secure, including MiamiOH-Visitor.

Wireless Access Outside

Miami has worked hard to provide MiamiOH-Secure to as many areas of campus as possible, including most outdoor seating and gathering areas, as well as most parking lots on all Ohio campuses.

Wi-Fi for Campus Visitors

Friends and family who visit can use the MiamiOH-Visitor network to access the web, or eduroam if they are visiting from a participating eduroam institution. Please note: MiamiOH-Visitor provides limited bandwidth and is not designed for academic work. This connection is suitable only for web browsing and is not inherently secure, unlike the MiamiOH-Secure network. Students should not use MiamiOH-Visitor.

Eduroam

A network supported by more than 600 universities in over 100 countries around the world. Using your Miami email address and password, you can log in to the eduroam network at any campus or location that offers it. Search “eduroam” at MiamiOH.edu/KnowIT for more information.

Configuring mobile and other network devices

You will probably bring multiple devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops to campus. Miami’s Wi-Fi network can identify and connect most laptops, mobile devices, and other network devices. There are a few exceptions, however, like AppleTV.

Other ways to connect

Game consoles, DVRs, and streaming devices (Roku players) will work with Miami’s residence hall wired network and wirelessly on MU-GAMING.

In the dorm rooms, there is one ethernet jack per bed.

Some other devices, including AppleTV and some gaming consoles, may require manual network configuration. Instructions can be found at: MiamiOH.edu/networkregistration.

Note: Xbox One consoles require a wired connection (ethernet).

Wireless Printers

Wireless printers and personal access points are not allowed in the residence halls. They cause disruption to Miami’s wireless service—and you don’t want to be responsible for your neighbor getting kicked off the Wi-Fi. If you have a wireless printer, disable the wireless while on campus. Check your printer’s instructions or support website for how to turn off the wireless, and use a USB cable to connect to your computer.
