Generally, use this spelling, unless the proper name or degree is "theatre." Note that the official department name at Miami University is the Department of Theatre. Miami also offers a Bachelor of Arts in theatre and refers to minor and thematic program sequences as such.
Her degree in theatre provided the experience needed to join a Broadway cast after graduation.
In this instance, theatre refers specifically to a Miami program.
They dreamed of joining a theater company in Chicago, leading art direction for elaborate sets.
In this instance, theater is used as a general industry term.
