Registration Restrictions and Error Messages

Some Miami University courses are restricted to assure equity in scheduling for students for whom these courses are required. Even though courses appear to be open, many have restricted seats based on your academic division, major/minor, level, degree, campus, etc. Please see below for registration error messages that may appear when a course has been restricted.

Students should refer to Banner Self Service to check their college, major, class, level, degree, and program information:

  • Log into Banner Self Service
  • Select “Registration”
  • Select “Prepare for Registration”
  • Select the term and click “Continue”

Closed Section

The course section has reached the enrollment limit.

Campus Restriction

This course is restricted to students on a specific campus. Contact the One Stop if you have additional questions.

Oxford students seeking to take one or two classes on a regional campus while remaining an Oxford student may take classes at Hamilton, Middletown and Voice of America Learning Center generally without special permission. 

Some regional online classes are permanently unavailable to Oxford students. In the case of other regional online classes, Oxford students are restricted from registering or waitlisting until a specific date. Oxford students should consult with their Chief Departmental Advisor for assistance and additional information.

Field of Study Restriction

This course section is restricted to students in specific majors/minors. For additional information contact the course’s departmental office.

Program Restriction

This course section is restricted to students in certain degree programs. Examples of degrees are Bachelor of Science in Business, Bachelor of Science in Education, or Bachelor of Arts. For additional information contact the course’s departmental office.

Pre-Req/Co-Req/Test Score Error

This course requires a prerequisite OR requires a lecture and lab course to be selected at the same time when registering OR the course is restricted by placement test scores or other departmental specific criteria. Visit the online Bulletin for pre/co-requisite information.

Class Restriction

This course section is restricted to students at certain class levels (e.g., senior, junior, etc.). During registration, your classification is based on your earned and in progress credit hours. For additional information, contact the course’s departmental office.

College Restriction

College Restrictions restrict courses to students admitted to a certain college (academic division), such as College of Arts and Science, College of Engineering and Computing, College of Education, Health and Society, College of Creative Arts, or Farmer School of Business. For example, a business course may be restricted to students in the Farmer School of Business. For additional information contact the course’s departmental office.

Level Restriction

This course section is restricted to students at a certain academic level, i.e. graduate or undergraduate.
