Student Internships
Internships offer a valuable way to gain hands-on experience, explore career fields, and build professional skills. Internships may be extra-curricular, co-curricular, or for academic credit, depending on your program and goals. Use Handshake to navigate the internship search process, apply with confidence, and take your first steps toward a successful career.
Types of Internships
Extra-Curricular Internships
Extra-curricular internships are student-initiated and do not earn academic credit or appear on a transcript. They can be completed anytime, don’t require faculty supervision or a university agreement, and may be listed on a resume.
Co-Curricular Internships
Co-curricular internships relate to a student’s program of study and may be paid or unpaid. Students enroll in a 0–6 credit course with a faculty-approved learning plan, and the credit appears on the transcript (graded or credit/no credit).
Curricular Internships
Curricular internships are required for a student’s degree or major and must be completed for academic credit. They may be paid or unpaid, require a faculty supervisor and learning plan, and appear on the transcript (graded or credit/no credit).
You got an internship! Now what?
1. Request
Use Handshake to request for your experience to be documented and/or awarded academic credit. Choose your experience type then complete the experience form.
2. Approval
Your internship coordinator and site supervisor will receive notification of your request, review the details, then provide approval.
3. Follow Up
Your internship coordinator will guide you through the final steps of documenting your experience, including any evaluations or required paperwork.
