If your native language is Spanish, please email spanishplacement@MiamiOH.edu with your questions in order to discuss placement.
ALL students are asked to take the placement examination before registering for their first Spanish course.
The results of this test will be used only to place you into the appropriate level to be successful in our basic language sequence.
No academic credit is awarded for this assessment. It is impossible to "test out of" the language requirement for the College of Arts and Science (CAS-A) through this assessment. Instead, students with high scores are placed into a higher-level SPN course.
It is important to place as high as possible and to the best of your ability for two reasons: 1) You will save time and money by taking only the courses you need to meet the CAS-A requirement. 2) You will save yourself initial frustration at the beginning of the semester by placing into an appropriate course instead of having find out that you have to drop the course, find an appropriate course, and hoping to get into that new course before the add/drop period expires.
This assessment requires the use of a speaker or headset. There will be some audio and video segments on this exam that you will have to listen to in order to answer a question.
You may take this assessment once. If you believe that your score does not reflect your language ability, you must email spanishplacement@MiamiOH.edu and give detailed reasons and detailed explanations. It is the office's discretion whether or not they will allow a retake of the placement exam.
To get the most accurate placement, do not use any resources (dictionary, Google translate, another person, etc.) to assist you with this exam. Using such resources may be considered a violation of Miami University's academic integrity policy.
Although this assessment is untimed, please give yourself a good 60 to 90 minutes of unobstructed time in a quiet, distraction-free place to take this exam.
This placement test consists of 50 questions drawn from a variety of levels to assess your knowledge of Spanish. Choose the best answer presented for each question. You will only have one attempt.

If you need to retrieve your score or placement, log in to the FLTEST score lookup site by clicking the link at the top of this page.
For students who received a placement of SPN 202, you may register for either SPN 202 or SPN 203.
If you have additional questions or for more information about enrolling in Spanish courses, please contact: the Spanish Placement Advisors at email@example.com for advice about placement, or the Spanish & Portuguese department office at (513) 529-4500
If you are blocked by Banner when attempting to add a Spanish course, please contact the Spanish Placement Advisors at firstname.lastname@example.org for advice about placement.
Since your native language is Spanish, there is no need to take the placement test. You also have no need for placement guidance. These placement tests (and related placement guidance) are needed only by those taking Spanish as a foreign language. If you are interested in a Spanish course, please reach out to an advisor about the best place to start.
It is impossible to test-out of the language requirement for the College of Arts and Science (CAS-A) via this assessment. Instead, the higher the score, the higher the placement in SPN courses.
