Research Resources for Undergraduates
Research and Sponsored Programs Funding
The Office of Research and Innovation maintains a listing of a wide range of scholarships, fellowships, and other funding opportunities that are available to Miami students.
Undergraduate Grant Opportunities
This program supports full-time undergraduate students in designing and conducting independent research or creative projects in any discipline under the mentorship of a faculty member. Students submit a proposal for funding, carry out their projects, and are encouraged to present their findings at the annual Undergraduate Research Forum, with applications available through the Office of Research for Undergraduates and deadlines typically occurring mid-semester.
Doctoral-Undergraduate Opportunities for Scholarship (DUOS)
The DUOS program promotes collaboration between undergraduate and doctoral students by supporting joint research projects supervised by a faculty member in a Ph.D.-granting department. Open to all undergraduates and post-master’s doctoral students, the program requires the undergraduate student to serve as the primary author, with applications available through the Office of Research for Undergraduates and deadlines typically falling the Monday after Fall mid-term break.
Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research
Sigma Xi has been awarding research support to undergraduate and graduate students for over 100 years. Most grants range from a few hundred dollars to $1,000. Students apply for Sigma Xi grants online, and deadlines for submission are typically October 15 and March 15 of each year.
ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The URF allows students to conduct research in the summer with an American Society for Microbiology (ASM) member faculty mentor at their home institution and present the results at the ASM General Meeting the following year. The fellowship requires a joint application from both the student and faculty mentor. Applications for URF are available online, and the deadline for submission is usually February 1 each year.
Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program (USS)
A nine-week summer program, USS enables sophomores and juniors to do research or other creative activities in the summer with the supervision of an individual faculty mentor. USS guidelines are available from the Office of Research for Undergraduates (ORU), and application deadlines are in January of each year.
Howard Hughes Summer Internships (HHSI)
These 10-week science-focused internships, administered by the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Microbiology, provide an extended summer research opportunity under the supervision of an individual faculty mentor. Students that apply for the USS are automatically considered for Hughes internships.
