Travel Warnings and Updates

Travel Restriction

On June 4, 2025, a Presidential Proclamation was issued impacting international travel and visa issuance. F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors from the following countries who are outside the U.S. and do not possess a valid visa may not enter the U.S. beginning June 9, 2025.

  • Afghanistan
  • Burma
  • Burundi
  • Chad
  • Cuba
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Laos
  • Libya
  • Republic of the Congo
  • Sierra Leone
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Togo
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuela
  • Yemen

Important: The travel ban doesn’t immediately affect students currently in the U.S. or who have already been approved for visas. The proclamation does not revoke valid visas issued before June 9, 2025.

However, ISSS recommends citizens from these countries present in the U.S. currently avoid international travel and encourages any international student or scholar who wants to discuss international travel to schedule an appointment with an advisor.

 

Other Restrictions

  • On May 29, 2020, a proclamation suspending entry of certain students and researchers from China was announced. However, the new proclamation does not restrict entry of undergraduate students. Likewise, graduate students and researchers are generally exempt unless they have current or past links to "an entity in the PRC that implements or supports the PRC’s 'military-civil fusion strategy'." The entity list is not available but general guidance indicates that impact should be limited.
