Visa Renewal in Another Country

Applying for or renewing a visa in another or “third” country is risky and generally not advised by ISSS unless you have residency in that country. When applying for a nonimmigrant F-1 or J-1 visa, you are demonstrating intent to return to your home country; this can be challenging to do if you are applying for your visa elsewhere. Additionally embassy officials may be less familiar with the documentation you provide and your application may require extra administrative processing. If your visa application is denied, you will likely have to return to your home country to renew your visa.

Before making plans to renew your visa in a third country, check to see if the U.S. embassy or consulate will accept your application.
