Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Supervises staff; reviews schedules to ensure adequate staffing at all times; enforces University policies and procedures; monitors and evaluates performance; recommends any necessary disciplinary action.
  • Oversees operations of unit; set priorities; develops and implements operational plans; establishes policies and procedures.
  • Reviews completed jobs; ensures that any necessary changes or corrections are made.
  • Initiates the purchasing of parts and supplies for unit; researches cost and availability of items; ensures that an adequate inventory of parts and supplies is maintained.
  • Assists in preparing estimates for yearly staffing, materials, and equipment requirements.
  • Ensures that facility meets appropriate safety standards.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Director-Physical Facilities Department or University Engineer

Direction Given: Direct supervision of classified employees (Maintenance/Repair Technicians, Maintenance/Repair Specialists, and any functional or first line supervisors)

Minimum Requirements

Requires an associate's degree in technical field, or the equivalence in coursework and training, and five years of technical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires driver's license. An Engineer's License may be required in some cases.

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting of materials weighing 25-50 pounds. Periodic assignments given which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations.
