Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Maintains inventory of scientific equipment, materials, and supplies for use by faculty and students; orders materials as necessary.
  • Oversees the distribution of materials and supplies to students and faculty; coordinates the use of equipment.
  • Ensures that equipment is maintained and cleaned; performs minor repairs.
  • Prepares a variety of solutions and solvents as requested by faculty.
  • Supervises student employees; establishes schedules and assigns tasks; monitors work performance; reviews and approves time sheets.
  • Oversees facility to ensure safe conditions for users are maintained and that wastes are disposed of properly.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to either Scientific Stores Specialist, Senior, Department Chair, or Lab Manager Direction Given: Direct administrative supervision of student employees

Minimum Requirements

Requires nine months of coursework beyond high school in a scientific discipline related to department and one year of storeroom experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures
  • Knowledge of inventory control procedures
  • Knowledge of computers
  • Software used by department

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements which are particularly disagreeable and pose some hazard of personal risk.
