About the Scholarship

COF-BIRST Scholarship Amount: Up to $4,468 per year
Bioinformatics, a dynamic field merging biology, computer science, and data science, is at the forefront of scientific discovery and innovation, facilitating research and development across diverse sectors. By harnessing the power of computational tools and techniques to process and analyze massive biological data, bioinformatics is revolutionizing fields like healthcare, biomedicine, biotechnology, agriculture, environmental conservation, criminal justice, and more. 

The Choose Ohio First - Bioinformatics Innovators in Related STEM Fields (COF-BIRST) scholarship is open to students enrolled in the below degree programs at Miami University's College of Engineering and Computing and College of Arts and Science. Eligible students (Ohio residents) enrolled in one or more of the majors below are automatically considered for this scholarship. No separate application is required.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be an Ohio resident 
  • Major in one of the following degree programs (List of Eligible Majors):
    • BS in Computer Science

    • BS in Software Engineering

    • BS in Data Science and Statistics

    • BS in Data Analytics

    • BS in Biology

    • BS in Botany

    • BS in Zoology

    • BS in Microbiology

    • BS in Public Health

    • BS in Medical Laboratory Science

    • BS in Biomedical Engineering

    • MS in Clinical Engineering

    • BS in Chemical Engineering

    • BS in Smart Manufacturing Engineering

    • BS in Biochemistry

    • BS in Chemistry

  • Scholarship can be maintained with a change of major only within the aforementioned list of majors.

 

Scholarship Selection and Renewal Criteria:

  • The Scholarship is offered to students based on merit and financial need. 
  • This is a competitive scholarship, so the first consideration will be given to students with the highest GPA, test scores, and their interest in the eligible majors.
  • Successful applicants are expected to participate in career development activities and support programs for academic enrichment.
  • An applicant has to maintain a GPA of 3.0 and above in the intended eligible major.
  • This scholarship can be renewed for up to three more years provided scholars maintain compliance with program requirements (3.0 GPA or higher) and funding continues through the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
