Yes, it is mandatory. The primary goal of our orientation is to help new international students have a smooth transition to the Miami University campus and U.S. life. International Student Orientation provides international students with vital information and resources to maintain visa status, learn about Miami’s academic and student conduct policies, introduce students to various resources on campus, and also provides an opportunity to meet and connect with other international students and iPOLs.
No, there is no cost to attend orientation. However, all new students will be charged a one-time international student fee. Undergraduate students will be charged $200 and graduate students will be charged $100. You will see this charge on your Miami bill 1-2 weeks after the start of the semester.
Also, please note that for those living on-campus a pre-semester, early move-in fee of around $40/night will be charged until the housing contract begins.
All international students are expected to participate in orientation and we look forward to welcoming you to campus. Once you have confirmed your travel and arrival plans, you should submit your Arrival Confirmation adn Document Upload. Additional details will be shared in the Orientation Newsletter. Please make sure you are regularly checking your MiamiOH.edu email.

Students living on-campus will receive their housing assignment sometime after they complete the housing contract. You can access your room with your Miami Digital ID. You will receive more detailed housing information from Campus Services Center, CampusServicesCenter@miamioh.edu, prior to your arrival.
Students living off-campus should contact the apartment leasing office, property management or landlord for move-in arrangements and time.
Miami requires placement tests for most incoming students. Based on the standardized test results that you submitted to the Admission Office, you might need to complete English Speaking, English Writing and Math placement test(s) before advising and course registration. Students need to learn about the Miami Plan and their academic program prior to meeting with academic advisors and registering for classes as part of the online orientation program in Canvas, Miami’s learning management system.
Once you’ve taken necessary placement tests, if any, and completed the academic preparation modules in Canvas, you’ll receive information on how to meet with an academic advisor and complete course registration.
Please check your MiamiOH.edu email for additional information about placement testing and preparing for academic advising.
Consult with your departmental contact to register for courses.
If you have additional questions after reviewing the information above, please contact ISSS at international@miamioh.edu.
In our orientation newsletter, you will learn more about other important topics such as campus resources, life in Oxford (banking, shopping, cell phone services, festivals, etc.), and departure-related topics (what to pack, how much money to bring, shipping packages to campus, etc.).
