Life as a Cadet

Life as an Army ROTC Cadet at Miami University

Life as an ROTC cadet at Miami University begins the moment you step into our Living Learning Community. The LLC is more than a residence hall—it is where leadership, accountability, and friendship take root. Cadets live alongside peers who share the same commitment to service, discipline, and academic excellence. From early morning physical training to late-night study sessions and team-building events, daily life in the LLC builds habits of success and a support system that lasts well beyond graduation.

Located in in Havighurst Hall, the Living Learning Community also provides direct access to key ROTC facilities that support daily training and development. Just steps away, cadets have access to dedicated classrooms, equipment storage areas, and common spaces designed for mentorship and collaboration. This proximity allows for seamless transitions between academics and military training, reinforces professional standards, and fosters constant interaction between underclassmen and upperclassmen leaders. The convenience of living and training in the same environment strengthens accountability, builds cohesion, and creates a fully immersive leadership experience from day one.

Residence Hall - Havighurst Hall

The Army ROTC Living-Learning Community at Havighurst Hall offers cadets a purpose-driven residential experience that integrates academic excellence, physical fitness, and leadership development in one cohesive environment. Havighurst Hall is a traditional-style residence hall located on Miami University’s Western Campus, fostering a close-knit community environment ideal for teamwork, accountability, and peer support.

All Army ROTC academic courses are taught nearby in Boyd Hall, providing convenient access to classroom instruction and the cadet lounge. Leadership lab is conducted in Western Woods, directly behind Boyd Hall, providing ample time to grab any equipment from the residence hall before lab. Since physical training is conducted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:00 being close to either Boyd Hall or Cook Field, makes early morning workouts significantly more convenient.

A Day in the Life of a Cadet

A Military Science 1 (MS1) cadet is typically a first-year student (freshman) in Army ROTC.

As an MS1, you'll take the foundational courses:

  • MSC 121 (Foundations of Officership) in one semester
  • MSC 122 (Developing Leaders & Tactics) in the other

These come with required corequisite leadership labs, totaling 8 credit hours across the year (4 in fall, 4 in spring).

Lab meets for two hours on Thursdays (typically 3:00–5:00 p.m.). You'll need to wear your issued uniform from the start of the day through the end of lab.

Physical Readiness Training (PRT) happens three mornings a week—Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00–7:30 a.m. This 90-minute session focuses on building fitness to prepare for the Army Fitness Test (AFT).

Each semester includes one Field Training Exercise (FTX)—usually a weekend event at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where you'll apply classroom and lab skills in the field.

For those wanting more challenge, extracurricular options include:

  • Ranger Challenge — the competitive "varsity sport" of ROTC, requiring an extra PT session and class at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Pershing Rifles — a precision drill and military fraternity with pledging activities often on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

This schedule keeps ROTC demanding but manageable alongside your regular college classes—it's all about building leadership, fitness, and discipline from day one. If your program's details have shifted slightly (schedules can vary year to year), check the latest from Miami's Army ROTC page or cadre for confirmation
