These merit-based awards recognize academic achievement, leadership, athletic involvement, and character while providing the financial support necessary to focus on earning a degree.
Scholarships may cover full tuition and fees or room and board, along with an annual book allowance. As you pursue your degree, you will gain hands-on leadership experience and professional development that prepares you to commission as an officer in the U.S. Army. More than a scholarship, it is an investment in your education, leadership growth, and future service

Army ROTC Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GFRD) Scholarship
The Army ROTC GRFD Scholarship, which includes the popular Minuteman Scholarship for the Army Reserve, is designed for students who want the benefits of an ROTC scholarship while guaranteeing they will commission into the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. This option is perfect for future officers who want to serve their country part-time as Citizen-Soldiers while building a successful civilian career right after graduation. Cadets in this program also participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), allowing them to drill with a Reserve or Guard unit and earn additional pay while in college.
In addition to covering tuition and fees or providing room and board benefits (depending on the scholarship type), GRFD recipients receive an annual book allowance to help offset educational expenses. Through the Simultaneous Membership Program, cadets gain firsthand experience working alongside commissioned officers and noncommissioned officers in real units, developing practical leadership skills that complement classroom instruction.
The GRFD pathway offers stability and predictability, allowing cadets to plan their post-graduation careers with confidence. Whether pursuing careers in business, healthcare, engineering, law enforcement, education, or public service, graduates serve in their local communities while leading Soldiers and making a direct impact at the state and national level. It is an ideal choice for those who want to lead, serve, and maintain strong ties to home while balancing military service with civilian professional success.
GRFD Scholarships come in multiple lengths to match different points in your college journey. The main types include:
- 4-Year Minuteman / GRFD Scholarship: Full support starting as a freshman (primarily for high school seniors, often limited to public universities)
- 3-Year Advanced Designee (3AD): Begins benefits in sophomore year for qualified students
- 2-Year and 3-Year GRFD Scholarships: Most common for current college students (especially rising juniors and transfers)
The GRFD Scholarship offers strong financial support combined with immediate military experience and income. Recipients receive the following benefits:
- Full tuition and mandatory fees or a room-and-board allowance of $12,000 per year
- $1,200 per year for books and school supplies
- Tax-free monthly stipend of $420 for 10 months during the academic year, once contracted
- Additional monthly drill pay through the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)
- Potential eligibility to use certain GI Bill benefits depending on scholarship length
The GRFD Scholarship guarantees you a specific path that allows you to serve while keeping maximum flexibility for your civilian life. Here’s what to expect after graduation:

- Fulfill an 8-year service obligation, typically served as a part-time drilling officer (one weekend per month, two weeks per year)
- Complete the Basic Officer Leaders Course (BOLC) in your branch

Army ROTC Campus-Based (On-Campus) Scholarship

The Army ROTC Campus-Based Scholarship, also known as the On-Campus or In-College Scholarship, is designed for students who enter college without an ROTC scholarship and later elect to participate in the program. These awards are granted locally by the Professor of Military Science (PMS) and the ROTC battalion at the student’s institution, rather than through the national selection board. This pathway enables freshmen, sophomores, and transfer students to qualify for substantial financial support after demonstrating academic achievement and leadership potential within the ROTC program.
The process begins with enrollment as a non-contracted cadet, which carries no military obligation during the first two years. Students complete Military Science coursework, participate in structured physical training, and engage in leadership development activities to establish a competitive record. When ready, candidates submit a scholarship application packet, complete a formal board interview with the battalion cadre, and compete in local scholarship boards typically conducted during the fall and spring semesters.
Selected cadets receive the same comprehensive benefits as other Army ROTC scholarship recipients—full tuition or a room-and-board allowance, an annual book allowance, and a monthly stipend—while continuing their training. Upon graduation, they commission as Second Lieutenants and fulfill an eight-year service obligation that may be served on Active Duty, in the Army Reserve, the Army National Guard, or any combination of these components. This on-campus route provides a flexible and accessible entry into a fully funded path to Army leadership.
Ohio Army National Guard Scholarship

The Ohio Army National Guard Scholarship is one of the most generous state education benefits available today. It covers 100% of tuition at Miami University for enlisted Guard members pursuing associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and nursing degrees. A six-year enlistment qualifies members for 96 tuition units, roughly four full years of college, while a three-to-five-year commitment provides 48 units. The scholarship can also be combined with Federal Tuition Assistance.
For those aiming higher, the 09R Program (Simultaneous Membership Program) offers the perfect blend of education, leadership, and service. College students enlist in the Ohio Army National Guard as 09R ROTC cadets while participating in the Army ROTC program. They drill one weekend a month with a local unit with Drill Pay, receive a monthly ROTC stipend once contracted, and remain fully eligible for the complete Ohio National Guard Scholarship. This path provides real-world military leadership experience long before commissioning.
Together, these programs allow motivated individuals to earn thier degree with little to no debt while serving their state and building an impressive resume. Whether starting as an enlisted Soldier with the traditional scholarship or pursuing the officer route through 09R, members graduate with a degree, valuable experience, and a meaningful part-time military career in the Ohio Army National Guard.
