The Oath of the Order of the Engineer and Pledge of the Computing Professional ceremony offers a formalized rite of passage for Miami University engineering and computing graduates and alumni. For questions about this year's ceremony, please contact Katherine Ehlert, Ph.D. at ehlertk@MiamiOH.edu.
What happens during the ceremony?
During this ceremony, students graduating in engineering disciplines (and alumni in engineering fields) have the opportunity to recite the Oath of the Engineer. Following the Oath, these participants receive the Engineer’s Ring: a stainless steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand by engineers who have accepted the Obligation of an Engineer in a Ring Ceremony.
Students graduating in computing disciplines (and alumni in computing fields) have the opportunity to recite the Pledge of the Computing Professional. The Pledge is modeled after the Order of the Engineer. Following the pledge, these participants receive a pin which spells “Honor” in ASCII. ( ASCII is a data-encoding format for electronic communication between computers.)Who Can Participate?
Miami University College of Engineering and Computing alumni (of any year) and graduating students are invited to participate in the ceremony and take the Oath or Pledge. Faculty or staff members who are not yet inducted are also welcome to participate. All are welcome to witness and celebrate.
Students who plan to graduate in Winter 2026, Spring 2026, or Fall 2026 will be eligible to participate in the May 2026 ceremony.
Register here on or before March 27, 2026.
What does it mean to participate?
Participation in the Order of the Engineer Oath and the Pledge of the Computing Professional does not imply membership in (or obligations to) any organization. Rather, the ceremony acts as a rite of passage for participants. It signifies commitment to professional conduct and integrity within the fields of engineering and computing.
The Oath and Pledge celebrate that engineering and computing are highly regarded professions with high ethical standards. They emphasize pride and responsibility in those who have built, or are about to build, careers in these fields.
