Faculty Awards
The Miami University College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) presents two annual awards to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding excellence in teaching and research. These awards are the Arthur Olson Generational Outstanding Teaching Excellence Award and the Shreya and Amit Jain CEC Outstanding Researcher Award. Both awards are presented to the faculty at the Spring Alumni & Friends Conference each year. More information on these awards, our most recent honorees, and a list of previous recipients, can be found below.
Arthur Olson Generational Outstanding Teaching Excellence Award
Carter Hamilton, Ph.D.
Before coming to Miami, Carter Hamilton, Ph.D., worked for the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company as a Materials and Process Engineer on the C-130 and P-3 airframes, providing material solutions and metallurgical expertise to Design, Stress and Manufacturing Engineering. Following Lockheed Martin, he worked as the Quality Manager and Plant Metallurgist for Universal Alloy Corporation, coordinating all the activities of the Quality Assurance department and directing metallurgical investigations and alloy development research. Upon coming to Miami University in 2004, he sought to create a classroom environment that engages students through the use and study of actual industry examples, situations, concepts and problems. He has taught numerous courses during his tenure at Miami, ranging from first-year introductory courses to graduate level advanced courses. In addition, he developed and implemented study abroad opportunities at the AGH University Science and Technology in Kraków, Poland for undergraduate and graduate students. Outside of teaching, his research agenda includes a comprehensive program centered on the friction stir welding of dissimilar metals and the associated challenges posed to materials science, metallurgy and manufacturing.
The Arthur Olson Generational Teaching Excellence Award is named in honor of Arthur Andrew Olson, Sr. and Arthur Andrew Olson, Jr. by their namesake grandson/son: Arthur Andrew Olson III – a 1972 Systems Analysis graduate from Miami University’s College of Engineering and Computing.
All three individuals pursued a business career closely tied to the United States government’s recognition of the pivotal importance of technology in the prospering growth of the country’s economy and the welfare of its citizens; all three individuals were/are registered intellectual property attorneys.
The elder Olsons rose to prominence regionally and nationally as senior partners in the intellectual property firm which eventually bore both of their names during the course of the 20th century (from Olson, Mecklenburger, Von Holst, Pendleton & Neuman to Neuman, Williams, Anderson & Olson), and established themselves individually as professionals highly regarded for professionalism and excellence amongst their peers and clients. Through their work on behalf of individual inventors as well as highly regarded Fortune 500 corporations, these individuals established and protected the intellectual property rights of their clients while helping to shape the United States government’s intellectual property policies so critical to the advancement of technology and the standard of living of its citizens.
