Stephanie Danker, associate professor of Art Education, recently published the book, “Autobiographical Lectures of Leaders in Art Education, 2001-2021,” a scholarly collection highlighting the nature of biography in the history of art education. Danker also received the 2024 Outstanding Activist/Community Project Award, with Joy Bertling of the University of Tennessee and Pin-Hsuan Tseng of Penn State, through the National Art Education Association’s Ecology and Environment Interest Group.

Johnson receives grant to support book project research
Katie Johnson, professor of English, recently received a Getty Research Grant to support research on a new book project tentatively entitled “From Coast to Coast: Racing Transatlantic Performance.” Based in Los Angeles, Getty is a “leading global arts organization committed to exhibiting, conserving, and understanding the world’s artistic and cultural heritage.”
Hamlin, League of Women Voters partner with Broadway musical
Kimberly Hamlin, Chamberlin Family Professor and chair of History, and a member of the board of directors of the League of Women Voters of the United States, was one of several LWV directors who partnered with the Broadway musical "Suffs" on Aug. 24 in recognition of Women’s Equality Day, the day commemorating the adoption of the nineteenth amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920, which gave some women the right to vote. This special “League Night” also included a panel discussion featuring the League’s incoming CEO, historian Kimberly Hamlin, journalist Erin Geiger Smith, and Suffs cast members Kirsten Scott and Dana Costello that focused on how women have shaped democracy since the suffrage movement and what’s at stake in the 2024 election.
Miami students earn journalism awards
Miami University Journalism students won several honors in this year’s Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism awards, including taking three spots in the Best Student Reporter – Print/Online category.
Sean Scott of The Miami Student won the Best Student Reporter category, with Venessa Konadu of the Oxford Observer and Olivia Patel of The Miami Student earning finalist designations.
Raquel Hirsch and Patel also won for Best Student Podcast for work on the People and Policies podcast, while Jessica Opfer won the Best Student Special Project category.

Hunger project earns funds from American Psychological Foundation
Jeffrey Hunger, assistant professor of Psychology, received $9,664 from the American Psychological Foundation for a project entitled "Disability Discrimination, Mental Health, and Disability Identity."
Knoll receives funding from Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources
Lesley Knoll, assistant professor of Biology, received $13,923 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, pass-through funds from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for a project entitled "Oxygen and Temperature Profiles in Midwest Glacial Lakes."
Ohio Public Works Commission awards Libby funding
Lori Libby, senior project manager for Ohio Public Works in the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability, received $65,000 from the Ohio Public Works Commission for the project "District #10 Administrative Cost Program—Ohio Public Works Commission."
Moore earns funding for two projects
Richard Moore, associate professor of Biology, received $19,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a project entitled "Untangling the Taxonomic Relationships Between Two Petitioned Pitcher Plants in the Sarracenia Rubra Species Complex, Sarracenia Rubra ssp. Gulfensis and Sarracenia Rubra ssp. wherryi." Moore also received $21,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a project entitled "Field Surveys and Analyses of Population Differences for In- and ex-situ Conservation of Federally Endangered Harper's Beauty (Harperocallis flava)."
Sustainability institute director receives funds from Mud Run Conservancy
Jonathan Levy, director of the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability, received $39,875 from the Mud Run Conservancy for the project entitled "Investigation of Groundwater/Surface-Water Interactions in Mad River Township, Clark County, Ohio."
Sidebottom, Reiff project receives funds
Mark Sidebottom, associate professor, and Karl Reiff, assistant lecturer, of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, received $49,400 from DuPont Electronics for a project entitled "Continuous Impact Testing of High Temperature Polymers."
Michael Brudzinski, professor of Geology and Environmental Earth Science, received $75,867 from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "Increasing Coordination and Adoption of Multi-Hazard Decision Support Tools and Services."
Applebaum, Nelson receive funds for project
Robert Applebaum, director of the Ohio Long-Term Care Research Project and senior research scholar, and Ian Matthew Nelson, research scholar, in the Scripps Gerontology Center, received $178,090 from Ohio State University, pass-through funds from the Ohio Department of Medicaid, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and the American Rescue Plan Act, for a project entitled "Survey of Home Care Agencies in Ohio."
Jezkova awarded funds from United States Fish and Wildlife Service
Tereza Jezkova, associate professor of Biology, received $122,108 from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service of a new award for a project entitled "Using Conservation Genomics to Determine the Effectiveness of Culvert Removals for Restoring Riverine Connectivity in the Upper Black River Watershed."
Alumasa project earns funds from U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services
John Alumasa, assistant professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, received $100,747 from the Pennsylvania State University, pass-through funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for a project entitled "Development of Antibiotic Adjuvants to Acert Resistance Conferred by Cfr, a Radical S-Adenosylmethionine Methylas."
Radke receives grant from National Institute on Drug Abuse
Anna Radke, associate professor of Psychology, received $373,181 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for a project entitled "Cholinergic Interneuron Regulation of Opioid-Related Behaviors."
Kimiecik earns Cortland alumni honor
Jay Kimiecik, associate professor of Kinesiology, was the recipient of SUNY Cortland’s Distinguished Educator Award, sponsored by the SUNY Cortland Alumni Association. Those selected are the result of a nomination and competitive selection process. The Distinguished Educator Award recognizes Cortland alumni for "rendering outstanding services to the educational field” and “for their success as teachers and mentors.”
The Miami Student wins several state awards
The Miami Student won six out of the 1o journalism awards offered to collegiate newspapers at the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Best Journalism Contest this summer. The Miami Student placed second in the Best College Newspaper category. The Student’s sports section took first and second place in the Best College Sports Writing category, with winning pieces from Jack Schmelzinger and Kethan Babu. Austin Smith placed first in Best College News Writing with his environmental focus on reporting through The Student’s GreenHawks section, Meredith Perkins ranked first for Best College Opinion Writing, and Reagan Rude took second place in Best College Feature Writing.
An awards ceremony was held for the competition on Aug. 24 in Cleveland.
Thomas Poetter, professor of Educational Leadership, is author of “Curriculum Fragments: A Currere Journey through Life Processes” published in July by Routledge. The book “is a proposal for practicing curriculum inquiry through and participating in life processes,” according to a reviewer.
Capt. Lamphear serves as keynote speaker
Capt. Jeffrey Lamphear, NROTC Commanding Officer and chair of Naval Science, was a keynote speaker at the groundbreaking ceremony for the USS Cincinnati Memorial at Voice of America Metro Park. Most of the Naval Science department staff were also a part of the ceremony ( Ch. 19). Also in “USS Cincinnati sub memorial closer to reality” (Journal News).
Pepper Stetler, professor of Art History, is author of “A Measure of Intelligence: One Mother’s Reckoning with the IQ Test” published in August by Diversion Books. In a quest to advocate for her daughter, who has Down Syndrome, Pepper Stetler uncovers the dark history of IQ tests that leads her to question what exactly we are measuring when we measure intelligence.
Miami University Students visit AmCham
Miami students studying in Luxembourg recently visited the American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg (AMCHAM). Chairman Paul Schonenberg discussed the challenges and opportunities faced by international people living and working in Luxembourg, the story of the creation and development of AMCHAM in Luxembourg and his personal career development and life lessons from living and working in Luxembourg for 30 years.
$3 million donation to help Altman Institute's L.I.F.E. grow
In just four years, Miami University’s L.I.F.E. (Leading the Integration of Faith & Entrepreneurship) initiative has evolved from a back-of-the-napkin idea into an expanding program focused on studying the relationship between faith and entrepreneurship through rigorous academic research, a course taught in the Farmer School of Business, a student organization, and an international research conference.
The initial work has been so impressive that an anonymous donor is providing a $3 million gift to increase L.I.F.E.’s funding, from initial seed money to a substantial endowment approaching $5 million.
